Become Your Own PC Repairer
By: Greg Culver

Most of us have been using personal computers since long time and have purchase new models of computers from time to time moving with the changing technology. Usually we have to rush to the nearest repair shop when our computer faces some occasional problems and is in need of repairs. Sometimes we could not resolve what action has been taken or which part has been rectified. We are not able to determine the reason for such big bills for repairs done on the machine.

There is no harm in having the knowledge of the inside working of the machine even if you don?t repair your machine yourself. It is beneficial for you if you can diagnose the problems of the machine and know the repairs required. This knowledge would help you to deal with the service personnel who would repair your machine as you can discuss the issue with them and they cannot overcharge you in any way.

If you are completely unfamiliar with computer parts and components then it is better to get a book and start reading to increase your theoretical knowledge first. Recently, I came across the best book on the subject I have ever seen called ?Upgrading and Repairing PCs? written by Scott Mueller. This book covers almost all the aspects of repairing computers and can solve most of your problems. You can also get the information regarding repairs from any good source of technical information such as local electronics shop etc.

After you are familiar with the technical information, now is the time for introduction with the real hardware. The best way to learn hardware is by reassembling the machine after opening and separating all its parts, this way you will have knowledge about each and every part of the machine. But don?t try this with your new or expensive machine. It is better to purchase an old machine in working condition and practice on it.

You can easily find Pentium 1 and Pentium 2 machines that are not used now by many people and are lying in their homes as useless devices even if they are in good working condition. So you can purchase such machines or even get them for free as most of your friends and family would be really looking for someone to take this junk from their home. The cost of the machine simply depends on the interest you show in the machine which were useless a minute before lying in the cartons in garages and basements.

You must have knowledge about the different types of various RAM, disk drives, processor chips etc. along with the way to fit them in the system. Remember that there is high voltage in the back of the computer, so you must ensure safety and not to touch those parts. It is better to switch off the power to the machine before opening the cabinet.
