Internet Marketing the Importance of Education
By: Kelley Kilanski
If you were to open up a business that was not online, would you bother not to do any research? Would you bother not to find out all you could about running a business? about the laws? about the products you sell? about how to advertise? your choices of advertising and the costs?
Probably not, but this is what many affiliate and internet marketers do when first starting up, they don't bother to educate themselves about the product they are selling and read very few good guides to affiliate and internet marketing. Are you one of those? I was. When I first started out, I wanted to get as much information as possible for as little money as possible. What happened is that I ended up getting information of little value or buying guides that were nothing but schemes that benefited the seller rather than me.
Educating yourself in order to be an effective and consistent affiliate marketer is one of the most important aspects of internet and affiliate marketing, especially if you want to make money. If you want to waste money, then education is not necessary. There are 4 key aspects of affiliate marketing that you need to know in order not to waste money: Search engines, the various means of advertising, the latest technology and trends, and knowing your audience and product.
Search Engines
Most of us have used a search engine for finding information and products on the web. However, few know how websites are ranked. If you are an affiliate marketer, you need to know how they rank you organically and how you are ranked in the paid inclusion sections if you choose to go this route. If you don't know, you could find yourself spending lots of money on advertising or even being banned from the search engines. It isn't that difficult to find information about the search engines, either. Usually, they have a webmaster's section that will tell you specifically what you need to know in order to rank better and not get banned. I have also found this section highly useful when designing my site for pay-per-click advertising in order to increase my quality score.
Ways to Advertise
There are a variety of ways to advertise on the web. Email and the search engines are not the only way, although two of the most popular and widely used. However, there are other means such as blogs, RSS feeds and podcasting. If you are not up to date on these aspects of the internet, you need to learn a least a little about them and more if you truly want to use them as means of advertising.
Latest Technology and Trends
Technology and trends are something that everyone should do research on whether or not they are advertising on the web. RSS feeds and podcasting are only two of the latest trends that are sweeping the internet. Knowing about them and incorporating them into your marketing model can go a long way in increasing the organic traffic to your site and making that sale.
Knowing Your Audience and Product
This is perhaps the most important aspect of all. If you don't know the people who will potentially buy your product and you don't know your product, how do you expect to sell your product? Think about yourself as a buyer. Would you ever buy a product from someone you suspected of not knowing anything about it? Would you ever buy a product you knew nothing about? The fact is, to be able to sell a product effectively, you need to become the buyer and ask yourself whether you would buy the product from you. Do you come across as being knowledgeable about your product or do you simply spout out the copy given on the main webpage for the product? For some products this works well for, but for others, the buyers want to trust what you have to say. If they don't, they won't buy from you and they won't come back to purchase more products from you either. You lost on two ends if you fail to know your audience and product.
Knowing these four key aspects will not guarantee you will be successful, but if you start out seeking knowledge, in the long run it will make you a more solid affiliate marketer when you find out what it is that might need to be changed to be successful. Your best bet is to do as much research as you can and then consult those who have failed before you, but have learned from their mistakes and other's mistakes and are willing to share their experiences.
